Manchin Secures Army Corps of Engineers Study for Kanawha River Bain

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) secured a provision in the Water Resources Development Act (WRDA) 2016, authorizing the Army Corps of Engineers to study the hydrology of the Kanawha River Basin, including the Elk River Basin, the Greenbrier River Basin and the Cherry River Basin to reduce flood risks, enhance the ecosystem, support navigation, water supply, recreation and other water resource related purposes. The legislation passed the Senate today by a vote of 95 to 3.

“I am thrilled I was able to include a provision authorizing the Army Corps of Engineers to conduct studies to reduce flood risks,” Senator Manchin said. “West Virginia is still recovering from the devastating floods we experienced on June 23rd and this legislation is another step we can take to prevent future flooding throughout our state. I remain committed to using every tool at my disposable to helping our state recover and rebuild and look for ways to prevent this devastation in the future.”
