Senator Manchin Launching 'Call for Common Sense' Tour on Monday

During Next Two Weeks, Manchin Will Visit West Virginians to Hear their Concerns and Commonsense Ideas for Washington

Charleston, W.Va. – During the Senate’s first work period of the 112th Congress, Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) will travel around the state to hear from West Virginians personally about their concerns, insights and commonsense ideas for Washington. Senator Manchin’s two-week “Call for Common Sense” tour will include a series of listening stops on federal issues and substantive discussions of how to bring West Virginia’s values of commonsense problem-solving to Washington.

“In West Virginia, we know how to work together, and Washington needs a dose of our West Virginia values,” Senator Manchin said. “With all the serious federal issues facing our country, I need to hear from West Virginians about their concerns and priorities for the nation and the state for the next two years. The people of West Virginia know I have always and will always put the state first, and this tour is my opportunity to hear directly from the people face-to-face in my new role as Senator. I’m here to listen to commonsense ideas, insights and perspectives as I develop our legislative approach to our federal priorities.”

Beginning Monday, Jan. 10, as part of the two-week “Call for Common Sense” tour, Senator Manchin will host more than a dozen events, including issue-specific roundtables and public events to have conversations with West Virginians about their concerns and priorities for fixing Washington and creating jobs.

During the tour, the Senator will be meeting with seniors, veterans, small business leaders, representatives from the business and labor communities, university presidents, the National Guard and multiple other groups to hold discussions on a variety of topics, including business and labor concerns, the military and veterans’ affairs, energy and regulatory concerns, higher education, seniors’ issues and transportation. The Senator will host two town halls as open opportunities for members of the public to talk to him about their views and priorities.

To help kick-start the tour, the Senator will hold a press conference call Monday at 1 p.m. to brief reporters on the tour. During the call, he is expected to make opening remarks, discuss his upcoming schedule and take questions. The call is expected to last about 30 minutes.
