Transportation Worker 2 Equipment Operator – Wood County

Nature of Work

The Transportation Worker 2 Equipment Operator will report to the Wood County Headquarters. This candidate should be a team oriented individual who, under general supervision, actively participates in the construction , repair and maintenance of highways, culverts and or bridge structures. Duties include: Operating motorized highway maintenance equipment such as skid steer, utility tractor, aerial bucket truck, front-end loader, tandem-axle truck, and snowplow. Making major repairs to highways, culverts, and bridge structures. Making minor mechanical repairs in the field such as changing tires, blades, or filters. Responsible for maintaining equipment maintenance including but not limited to cleaning and lubricating equipment and checking fluid levels. Flagging, erecting traffic control signs and barricades on construction and maintenance projects, shoveling materials, cleaning culverts, mowing, and brush cutting. Performing other related duties as required. May be exposed to hazardous working conditions and inclement weather. 


The selected applicant will be placed in a U.S. Department of Labor apprenticeship program. Progression through the apprenticeship program is dependent upon hours completed, proficiency in work, training completed, as well as maintaining and/or obtaining a class A or B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
• In the area of assignment of Equipment Operator, a valid class A or class B Commercial Driver’s License is required.

Pay Grade: 11H
Base Hourly Rate: $13.9495

Typical Duties and Responsibilities

Typical Duties and Responsibilities of this classification are dependent upon the functional area assigned:
• Travel may be required; therefore, a valid driver’s license may be required.
• In the area of assignment of Equipment Operator, a valid class A or class B Commercial Driver’s License is required.
• A valid Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License may be required for Auto Body Repair, Bridge Maintenance, Mechanic, Building & Trade, or Traffic Control.
• Some positions in the Transportation Worker classifications may require certification(s) in the assigned area after employment. 

Transportation Worker 2 – Equipment Operator
• Drive dump, flatbed, or tandem-axle trucks
• Operate power vegetation equipment and attachments
• Operate highway maintenance equipment and attachments
• Operate heavy vehicles/GVWR 26,001 or greater
• Clean and lubricate equipment and check fluid levels
• Makes minor mechanical repairs in the field such as changing tires, blades, or filters
• Repair and construct various culvert types
• Patch cement, pavement and bridge decks
• Seal joints and cracks in paved surfaces
• Clean equipment and workshop
• Transport fuel to equipment
• In the area of assignment of Equipment Operator, a valid class A or class B Commercial Driver’s License is required.
• Some positions in the Transportation Worker classifications may require certification(s) in the assigned area after employment. 

Required Skills and Knowledge

• Knowledge of the procedures, techniques, and equipment used in the assigned area
• Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the assigned area
• Knowledge of the occupational hazards and applicable safety standards and procedures of the assigned area
• Knowledge of maintenance and repair methods practiced in the building maintenance trades
• Ability to repair and maintain tools and equipment used
• Ability to read operating manuals and specifications in the assigned area
• Ability to safely operate basic hand and power tools
• Ability to climb high steel structures
• Ability to operate and maintain highway equipment and attachments
• Ability to diagnose less complex mechanical problems and follow appropriate procedures for repair.
• Ability to maintain routine records (timecards, work repair orders)
• Ability to use hand tools and operate motorized equipment in the assigned areas
• Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
• Ability to train and work cooperatively with other skilled and semi-skilled workers

Required Education and Experience

REQUIRED TRAINING/EDUCATION 
• No formal education required.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE 
• Equipment Operator:  A valid class A or class B Commercial Driver’s License is required.
• No Substitutions.
