Highway Bridge Safety Inspector 5 – Kanawha County
Nature of Work
The Highway Bridge Safety Inspector 5 will work in maintenance division's quality assurance/quality control unit as a bridge inspection technician. Applicant will review bridge safety inspections submitted to the central office from all districts and consultants. Reports will be reviewed for completeness of the report following the WV bridge inspection manual, BIRM, and FWHA requirements. Completion of the WV safety inspection examination, FWHA approved fracture critical and two-week training courses are required. Technical access is preferred. Frequent field work and overnight travel is required. Therefore, a valid drivers license is required.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities
• Plans and schedules the work of bridge safety inspection teams within the district
• Supervises the work performed through the bridge safety inspection supervisors and subordinate staff
• Reviews and edits final inspection reports completed by inspection teams for accuracy, completeness and conformance to established guidelines
• Performs preliminary technical analysis such as stress analysis
• Reviews the quality of completed inspection work by comparing reported data with actual structural condition
• Writes periodic progress reports pertaining to the bridge safety inspection program within a district or statewide as required
• Works as an inspection team member or inspection team leader in the absence of other inspectors or team leaders
• Performs Load Rating Analysis
• Schedules Under Bridge Inspection Unit and other related equipment for Bridge Safety Inspectors
• The work involves establishing criteria. Assessment of program effectiveness or investigating or analyzing a variety of unusual conditions, problems, or questions.
• Travel may be required; therefore, a valid driver’s license may be required.
Required Skills and Knowledge
• Knowledge of the manuals and standards of the American Association of State Highway Transportation Officials and the American Institute of Steel Construction applicable to bridge safety inspection
• Knowledge of federal and state manuals and standards applicable to bridge safety inspection
• Knowledge of bridge design and construction principles and bridge mechanics
• Ability to effectively supervise the work of others
• Ability to interpret plans and specifications
• Ability to compute areas and volumes
• Ability to create and retain accurate notes and records
• Ability to make detailed sketches
• Ability to compute dead loads for various bridge types
• Ability to compute distribution factors for various bridge types
• Ability to complete standard forms and inventories
• Ability to write narrative technical reports
• Ability to climb bridge structures and perform strenuous physical activities
Required Education and Experience
REQUIRED EDUCATION
• An associate degree in Civil Engineering Technology from a college or university regionally accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET)
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE
• Nine (9) years of paid experience in inspection of in-service bridges. Successful completion of a training course based on the Federal Highway Administration’s “Bridge Inspector’s Training Manual” and a satisfactory score on the West Virginia Division of Highways’ “Bridge Inspector’s Certification Test” are required.
