Transportation Geologist Trainee - Kanawha County

Nature of Work

The Transportation Geologist Trainee will be assigned to the Aggregate and Soils Section. under supervision of the Aggregate and Soils Section Supervisor, employee will participate in all normal activities of investigations, performing physical tests on aggregate. Preparation and participation in aggregate training school, aggregate field problems, district laboratory inspections, petrographic analyses of aggregate and hardened concrete, sampling at quarries, report writing and other activities as directed. Cross training is required in soils lab.  Must either have or obtain aggregate inspector certification. The certification class will be provided by the Materials, Controls, Soils & Testing Division. Also requires basic computer skills and working with American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) and American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) procedures. Lifting over 50lbs and traveling in-state and out-of-state required. Performs other related duties as required.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities

• Installs and monitors various equipment to obtain data on subsurface conditions
• Collects, analyzes, and catalogs geologic samples
• Studies the location, character, and quantity of geologic deposits
• Updates geologic maps and combines historical survey reports from various sources into summaries/composites
• Maps water flow, disposition or sediment, and ground absorption for environmental review of the effect of pollution events and/or stability of proposed projects
• Assists in reviewing contamination assessment reports and proposals, remediation specifications, remedial action plans, closure plans, and permit applications for appropriate environmental integrity
• Participates in resistivity and seismic surveys
• Compiles statistical data on the production and value of the State's geologic resources
• Collects, verifies, loads, and manipulates geologic data for survey monitoring and mapping
• Interprets survey results and prepares findings reports
• Established rules, regulations, and procedures will be used to solve a variety of routine problems and answer a variety of standard questions
• Travel may be required; therefore, a valid driver’s license may be required.

Required Skills and Knowledge

• Knowledge of the fundamental principles of geologic science
• Knowledge of geological methods of collection, analysis, and documentation of field data
• Skill in the use of survey tools and equipment
• Skill in the preparation of geologic maps
• Skill in the reading and interpreting of topographic maps
• Ability to learn data input and manipulation procedures using computer software packages
• Ability to identify and classify rocks, minerals, fluids, soils, and geologic information
• Ability to learn acceptable methods, procedures, and approaches to making a complete and satisfactory geologic investigation
• Ability to assemble data to prepare technical reports
• Ability to maintain records and document findings regarding investigations
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, government officials, industrial representatives, and the public
• Ability to communicate with others, both orally and in writing
• Ability to walk long distances in adverse weather over rugged terrain
• Ability to lift and carry equipment for considerable distances

Required Education and Experience

REQUIRED TRAINING/EDUCATION 

  • Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university in geology.

 

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE

This is the entry level position for this series, therefore no experience is required.
