Transportation Worker 1 Equipment Operator – Preston County

Nature of Work

The Transportation Worker 1 performs apprentice level, unskilled to semi-skilled work in the construction and maintenance of highways, bridges, and related buildings and structures.
Cleans culverts and repairs shoulders. Flags Traffic. Uses light motorized highway maintenance equipment. Operates a variety of equipment such as: air compressor, jackhammer, power saws, etc.  Uses a variety of manual power hand tools. Operates maintenance equipment such as concrete mixers, light maintenance trucks, etc. Rough carpentry, builds forms and masonry. Assists other co-workers, follows oral and written instructions. Work cooperatively with others. Maintain routine records. May be exposed to hazardous work conditions and inclement weather. The selected applicant will be placed in a U.S. Department of Labor apprenticeship program. Selected applicant will be required within 6 months of employment to obtain commercial driver's license (CDL).  Progress through the apprenticeship program is dependent on hours completed and certifications, as well as obtaining and maintaining a CDL. Performs related work as required.

Pay Grade: 10H
Hourly Rate: 11.9095

Typical Duties and Responsibilities

Transportation Worker 1 - Equipment Operator
• Operate a light truck or vehicle
• Operate a fork truck to load and unload trucks
• May operate Endloader, Skid Steer, Rollers, Utility Tractor, and Bruch Chipper
• Control brush and vegetation using hand tools and other equipment
• Plow snow using a light truck
• Perform minor maintenance on fleet of equipment and vehicles
• Transport fuel to equipment
• Answer telephone and radio calls during snow removal and ice control
• Flags traffic at construction sites
• In the area of assignment of Equipment Operator, a Commercial Driver's License will be required within 6 months of employment
*Travel may be required; therefore, a valid driver’s license is required.

Required Skills and Knowledge

• Knowledge of general safety procedures.
• Knowledge of methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of vehicles and other motor driven equipment.
• Knowledge of the operation of motor driven equipment.
• Skill in the use of tools and equipment used in the repair of motor driven equipment Ability to diagnose minor mechanical problems and determine appropriate procedures for repair.
• Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
• Ability to learn from example and work cooperatively with others.
• Ability to maintain routine records (timecards, repair work orders).
