Transportation Worker 2 Bridge Maintenance – Harrison County
Nature of Work
The Transportation Worker 2 Bridge Maintenance Worker will report to the District Bridge Department in Harrison County. Under general supervision, will perform skilled work in the construction and maintenance of bridges. Drives dump, flat-bed, or tandem-axle trucks to transport equipment and materials to and from work sites. Patches and repairs pavement and bridge decks. Installs steel piling, steel reinforcing bars, and place and finish concrete. Will often be climbing the steel structures to repair damaged steel bridge components. Flagging, erecting traffic control signs and barricades on bridge maintenance projects. Will be required to operate other bridge maintenance equipment as employee training permits such as skid steer, aerial bucket truck, front-end loader, and backhoe. Selected candidate will be required, within 5 months of employment to obtain commercial driver's license (CDL). Performs other related duties as required. May be exposed to hazardous working conditions and inclement weather.
The selected candidate will be placed in a U.S. Department of Labor apprenticeship program. Progress through the apprenticeship program is dependent on the hours completed, proficiency in work, training completed, and certifications; as well as obtaining and maintaining a CDL.
Pay Grade: 11H
Base Hourly Rate: $13.9495
Typical Duties and Responsibilities
Transportation Worker 2 – Bridge Maintenance
• Drives dump, flat-bed, or tandem-axle trucks to transport equipment and materials to and from work sites
• Patch cement pavement and bridge decks
• Install steel piling, steel reinforcing bars, and place and finish concrete
• Climbs high steel structures to repair damaged steel bridge components
• May be required to operate other bridge maintenance equipment as employee training permits
• Seal joints and cracks in paved surfaces
* Travel may be required; therefore, a valid driver’s license may be required.
*A valid Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License may be required for Auto Body Repair, Bridge Maintenance, Mechanic, Building & Trade, or Traffic Control.
* Some positions in the class may require certification in the assigned area after appointment.
Required Skills and Knowledge
• Knowledge of the procedures, techniques, and equipment used in the assigned area
• Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the assigned area
• Knowledge of the occupational hazards and applicable safety standards and procedures of the assigned area
• Knowledge of maintenance and repair methods practiced in the building maintenance trades
• Ability to repair and maintain tools and equipment used
• Ability to read operating manuals and specifications in the assigned area
• Ability to safely operate basic hand and power tools
• Ability to climb high steel structures
• Ability to operate and maintain highway equipment and attachments
• Ability to diagnose less complex mechanical problems and follow appropriate procedures for repair.
• Ability to maintain routine records (timecards, work repair orders)
• Ability to use hand tools and operate motorized equipment in the assigned areas
• Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
• Ability to train and work cooperatively with other skilled and semi-skilled workers

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE
Two (2) years of full-time or equivalent part-time paid experience in bridge construction, highway maintenance, bridge maintenance, or structural steel construction.
Substitution: Successful completion of an approved vocational school program in any of the listed areas of assignment may be substituted for the required experience in the specified functional area.
