Transportation Worker 2 Traffic Control – Lewis County
Nature of Work
The Transportation Worker 2 Traffic Control will report to the District Sign Shop. Under general supervision, will be responsible for the fabrication and installation of traffic control signs and supports. Installation and removal of signposts as well as erecting traffic control signs and barricades in construction and maintenance projects. Will be responsible for operating various equipment for sign installation such as a hydraulic post driver, chop saw, torch, and hand tools. Will help with the installation of new or repaired electronic traffic signal systems, setting up lane closures, road closures, and detours signage as well as flagging motorist through the work zones. Duties also include Installing thermoplastic pavement markers, and spotting and coding for roadway striping. May operate motorized highway maintenance equipment such as skid steer, end loader, utility tractor, aerial bucket truck, front-end loader, man lifts, hydra platform, and tandem-axle truck. May be exposed to hazardous working conditions and inclement weather. Preference may be given to candidates currently possessing a Commercial Driver's License. Performs other related duties as required.
The selected applicant will be placed in a U.S. Department of Labor apprenticeship program. Progression through the apprenticeship program is dependent upon hours completed, proficiency in work, training completed, as well as maintaining and/or obtaining a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
Pay Grade: 11H
Base Hourly Rate: $13.9495
Typical Duties and Responsibilities
Typical Duties and Responsibilities of this classification are dependent upon the functional area assigned:
• Travel may be required; therefore, a valid driver’s license may be required.
• In the area of assignment of Equipment Operator, a valid class A or class B Commercial Driver’s License is required.
• A valid Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License may be required for Auto Body Repair, Bridge Maintenance, Mechanic, Building & Trade, or Traffic Control.
• Some positions in the Transportation Worker classifications may require certification(s) in the assigned area after employment.
Transportation Worker 2 – Traffic Control
• At the District level installs and removes signposts; erects traffic control signs and barricades on construction and maintenance projects.
• Operate hydraulic post driver to set new signposts
• Erect signposts and new signs along roadway
• Cut old signposts with a chop saw or remove with hand tools
• Utilize a torch to install pavement markings on roadway
• Set up traffic control signs and flag motorists at work zones
• Set up lane closures, road closures, and detours at work zones
• Manufacturing signs utilizing the Central Sign Shop machinery
• Distributing signs or sign accessories from Central Sign Shop to District Sign Shop
• A valid Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License may be required for Traffic Control.
• Some positions in the Transportation Worker classifications may require certification(s) in the assigned area after employment.
Required Skills and Knowledge
• Knowledge of the procedures, techniques, and equipment used in the assigned area
• Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the assigned area
• Knowledge of the occupational hazards and applicable safety standards and procedures of the assigned area
• Knowledge of maintenance and repair methods practiced in the building maintenance trades
• Ability to repair and maintain tools and equipment used
• Ability to read operating manuals and specifications in the assigned area
• Ability to safely operate basic hand and power tools
• Ability to climb high steel structures
• Ability to operate and maintain highway equipment and attachments
• Ability to diagnose less complex mechanical problems and follow appropriate procedures for repair.
• Ability to maintain routine records (timecards, work repair orders)
• Ability to use hand tools and operate motorized equipment in the assigned areas
• Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
• Ability to train and work cooperatively with other skilled and semi-skilled workers
Required Education and Experience
REQUIRED TRAINING/EDUCATION
• No formal education required.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE
• Traffic Control: Two (2) years of full-time or equivalent part-time paid experience in highway maintenance, traffic control, fabrication of aluminum or other metal parts, equipment, signs, or other fabricated materials.
• Substitution: Successful completion of an approved vocational school program in any of the listed areas of assignment may be substituted for the required experience in the specified functional area.
