Transportation Worker 3 Crew Chief – Webster County

Nature of Work

Transportation Worker 3 Crew Chief will report to the Webster County Headquarters. Under limited supervision, will act as a working crew leader, leading a crew participating in the maintenance and repair of highways. Investigates citizen complaints to determine the repairs and materials needed. Participates in meetings to determine the assignment of crew members to daily projects and overseeing the completion of work. Completes reports concerning time, materials, and inspection of work done. Maintains attendance records of the crew.  Will be required to become certified on one or more of the follow types of equipment: hydraulic crane, grader, bulldozer, backhoe, track/rubber-tire excavator, or welding unit.  A tanker endorsement may be required. May be exposed to inclement weather and hazardous working conditions. Performs other related duties as required. 

• A valid Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is required, and must be maintained, for the functional area of Crew Chief.  

Pay Grade: 12H
Base Hourly $22.2895

Typical Duties and Responsibilities

Typical Duties and Responsibilities of this classification are dependent upon the functional area assigned:
• Travel may be required; therefore, a valid driver’s license is required.
• In the functional areas of Equipment Operator and Crew Chief, the employee is required to have, and must maintain, a valid Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
• A valid class A or B Commercial Driver’s License may be required for the functional areas of Auto Body Repair, Bridge Maintenance, Building & Trade, Mechanic, and Traffic Control, at the discretion of the appointing authority. 

Transportation Worker 3 – Crew Chief
• Leads a crew of transportation workers and participates in maintenance and repair of highways.
• May lead a crew of sign shop employees in the fabrication, location, installation, and repair of highway signage.
• Investigates citizen complaints on roads and inspects highways to determine needed repair work.
• Assists in scheduling of maintenance and repair projects.
• Coordinates equipment and material needed.
• Assigns duties to crew members and leads crews in the completion of projects.
• Completes all required reports concerning time and attendance, materials, equipment, and inspection of work.
• Travel may be required; therefore, a valid driver’s license is required.
• In the area of assignment of Crew Chief, a valid class A or class B Commercial Driver’s License is required. 

Required Skills and Knowledge

• Knowledge of safety practices used in structural steel construction
• Knowledge of the procedures, techniques and equipment used in the assigned areas
• Knowledge of the occupational hazards and applicable safety standards and procedures of the assigned area
• Knowledge of basic blueprint reading
• Knowledge of general construction and maintenance practices
• Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the maintenance, repair and overhaul of gasoline and diesel-powered engines and their components
• Knowledge of the operation of motor driven equipment
• Ability to diagnose mechanical problems and determine appropriate procedures for repairs
• Ability to safely operate basic hand and power tools
• Ability to read operation manuals, blueprints, and specifications in the assigned areas
• Ability to operate motorized equipment in the assigned areas
• Ability to perform skilled trades work in bridge construction and maintenance
• Ability to operate and maintain highway equipment and attachments
• Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
• Ability to maintain accurate records of daily maintenance activities and of gauges and meters used in heating ventilation and cooling systems
• Ability to climb high steel structures
• Ability to train and work cooperatively with other skilled and semi-skilled workers

Required Education and Experience

REQUIRED TRAINING/EDUCATION 
• No formal education required.

  REQUIRED EXPERIENCE 
• Crew Chief: Valid Class A or B CDL and four (4) years of full-time or equivalent part-time paid experience
in highway construction or highway maintenance, or in bridge or structural steel construction.
• Substitutions: Successful completion of an approved vocational school program may be substituted for two (2) year of the required experience in the specified functional area.
