Transportation Worker 3 Mechanic – Marshall County
Nature of Work
The Transportation Worker 3 performs journey level skilled work in the construction and maintenance of highways, bridges, and related buildings and structures and erecting and operating a drilling rig. Position will be assigned in one of the following functional areas: Auto Body Repair, Bridge Maintenance, Building & Trade, Crew Chief, Equipment Operator, Mechanic, or Traffic Control. May serve as a working shop leader. Operates a variety of heavy motorized maintenance equipment such as power graders, bulldozer, backhoe, boom mower, track/rubber-tired excavator, and semi-trailer. Transports equipment throughout the state to construction or maintenance sites, makes major repairs to roads and bridges. Performs major overhaul of gasoline and diesel-powered highway maintenance equipment. Performs advanced work in the operation of complex sign making equipment or leads a crew in a district sign shop. Employee must maintain a valid Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). Performs other related duties as required.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities
Transportation Worker 3 – Mechanic
• Fabricates engine and machinery parts from blueprints and drawings
• Performs major overhaul of gasoline and diesel-powered automotive and highway equipment
• Performs a full range of maintenance, repair, and overhaul on diesel powered engines and components exclusive to diesel equipment
• Performs repairs to a variety of hydraulic systems
• Performs preventative maintenance inspections on heavy equipment
• With appropriate welding certification, repairs highway maintenance vehicles and equipment using welding equipment
• Maintains records of work orders, parts inventory and repair
* Travel may be required; therefore, a valid driver’s license is required.
*A valid class A or B Commercial Driver’s License may be required for the functional areas of Auto Body Repair, Bridge Maintenance, Building & Trade, Mechanic, and Traffic Control, at the discretion of the appointing authority.
Required Skills and Knowledge
• Knowledge of safety practices used in structural steel construction
• Knowledge of the procedures, techniques and equipment used in the assigned areas
• Knowledge of the occupational hazards and applicable safety standards and procedures of the assigned area
• Knowledge of basic blueprint reading
• Knowledge of general construction and maintenance practices
• Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the maintenance, repair and overhaul of gasoline and diesel-powered engines and their components
• Knowledge of the operation of motor driven equipment
• Ability to diagnose mechanical problems and determine appropriate procedures for repairs
• Ability to safely operate basic hand and power tools
• Ability to read operation manuals, blueprints, and specifications in the assigned areas
• Ability to operate motorized equipment in the assigned areas
• Ability to perform skilled trades work in bridge construction and maintenance
• Ability to operate and maintain highway equipment and attachments
• Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
• Ability to maintain accurate records of daily maintenance activities and of gauges and meters used in heating ventilation and cooling systems
• Ability to climb high steel structures
• Ability to train and work cooperatively with other skilled and semi-skilled workers

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE
Mechanic: Four (4) years of full-time or equivalent part-time paid experience as an automotive mechanic servicing either gasoline or diesel-powered vehicles or equipment
Substitutions: Successful completion of an approved vocational school program may be substituted for two (2) year of the required experience in the specified functional area.
