Transportation Worker 3 Traffic Control – Kanawha County

Nature of Work

 

The Transportation Worker 3 Traffic Control, under limited supervision, at the Division of Highways Central Sign Shop, performs full-performance journey level skilled maintenance and repair work on interstate and expressway signs and signs structures as well as the fabrication and installation of highway road signs. An employee in this classification is expected to perform the duties and functions of the crew leader as needed in the absence of the crew leader. The selected applicant will be responsible for mentoring lower-level employees. The applicant will utilize various tools and equipment such as metal sheers, corner punch machine, sign hole punch machine, roller applicator, banding machine, and band saw to fabricate and repair highway road signs. Installs, inspects, repairs, and maintains electronic traffic signal systems. Operates a forklift, warehouse equipment, and various tools to maintain inventory of highway signs. Prepares highway signs to be transported to other highway districts throughout the state for location and installation. May be exposed to hazardous working conditions and inclement weather. Performs other related duties as required.   


 The selected applicant will be placed in a U.S. Department of Labor apprenticeship program. Progression through the apprenticeship program is dependent upon hours completed, proficiency in work, training completed, as well as maintaining and/or obtaining a Commercial Drivers License (CDL). 
• A valid class A or B Commercial Driver’s License may be required for the functional areas of Auto Body Repair, Bridge Maintenance, Building & Trade, Mechanic, and Traffic Control, at the discretion of the appointing authority.

Pay Grade: 12H
Hourly Rate: $19.1295 

Typical Duties and Responsibilities

Transportation Worker 3 – Traffic Control
• At the DOH Central Sign Shop, utilizes various tools and equipment to fabricate highway road signs.
• Fabricates sign support assemblies.
• Utilizes metal sheers, corner punch machine, sign hole punch machine, roller applicator, banding machine, and band saw machine to fabricate and repair road signs.
• Install and/or erects new or repaired electronic traffic signal systems.
• Inspect, repair and maintain electronic traffic signal systems.
• Operates a forklift and other warehouse equipment to maintain inventory of highway signs.
• Prepares highway signs to be transported to other highway districts throughout the state for location and installation.
• Travel may be required; therefore, a valid driver’s license is required.
• A valid class A or B Commercial Driver’s License may be required for the functional areas of Traffic Control, at the discretion of the appointing authority. 

 

Required Skills and Knowledge

• Knowledge of safety practices used in structural steel construction
• Knowledge of the procedures, techniques and equipment used in the assigned areas
• Knowledge of the occupational hazards and applicable safety standards and procedures of the assigned area
• Knowledge of basic blueprint reading
• Knowledge of general construction and maintenance practices
• Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the maintenance, repair and overhaul of gasoline and diesel-powered engines and their components
• Knowledge of the operation of motor driven equipment
• Ability to diagnose mechanical problems and determine appropriate procedures for repairs
• Ability to safely operate basic hand and power tools
• Ability to read operation manuals, blueprints, and specifications in the assigned areas
• Ability to operate motorized equipment in the assigned areas
• Ability to perform skilled trades work in bridge construction and maintenance
• Ability to operate and maintain highway equipment and attachments
• Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
• Ability to maintain accurate records of daily maintenance activities and of gauges and meters used in heating ventilation and cooling systems
• Ability to climb high steel structures
• Ability to train and work cooperatively with other skilled and semi-skilled workers

Required Education and Experience

  REQUIRED TRAINING/EDUCATION 
• No formal education required.

  REQUIRED EXPERIENCE 
• Traffic Control: Four (4) years of full-time or equivalent part-time paid experience in fabrication of aluminum or other metal parts, equipment, signs, or other fabricated materials; or four (4) years of full- time or equivalent part-time paid experience in electrical or electronics repair, fabrication of aluminum or other metal parts, equipment, signs, or other fabricated materials.
• Substitutions: Successful completion of an approved vocational school program may be substituted for two (2) year of the required experience in the specified functional area.
