Manchin Encourages West Virginia Students to Apply for the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards Program

Top youth volunteers will receive a cash prize, engraved medallions and a trip to Washington, D.C. for the national recognition events

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) today encouraged West Virginia students in grades 5-12 who have been involved in volunteer community service to apply for the 21st annual Prudential Spirit of Community Awards Program. The program recognizes students’ dedication and contributions to their community on the local, state and national levels. Students chosen to be state honorees will receive a $1,000 award, an engraved silver medallion and a trip to Washington, D.C. on April 30-May 3, 2016 for the national recognition events. The application deadline is November 3.

“The Prudential Spirit of Awards program is a unique opportunity for dedicated West Virginia student volunteers to be recognized in the nation’s capital for the unwavering dedication they have demonstrated to their communities,” Senator Manchin said. “Our state is filled with so many bright, young people who not only understand the importance of community service, but actively contribute to their communities’ wellbeing. I encourage all interested potential candidates to apply.”

To apply, students must submit an online application and have it certified by their school principals, the Girl Scout council, county 4-H agent, American Red Cross chapter, YMCA or HandsOn Network affiliate.

The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards Program recognizes middle and high school students annually for their volunteer community service. The program was created in 1995 and has recognized more than100,000 students since, making it is the nations’ largest youth recognition program. It is sponsored by Prudential Financial in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP).
