Manchin, Ambassador of Qatar Announce $50K Investment in Reconnecting McDowell
Announcement part of West Virginia-Qatar Trade Mission to explore new business opportunities
Washington, D.C. – Today, at the West Virginia State Capitol, U.S. Senator Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) announced that the Embassy of the State of Qatar will make a $50,000 philanthropic investment in Reconnecting McDowell, a comprehensive, long-term initiative to revitalize McDowell County. The funding will go toward ongoing efforts to expand health and social services, promote economic development, improve education opportunities and expand broadband in the local community.
The announcement was part of a one-day West Virginia-Qatar Trade Mission -- organized by Senator Manchin, the Discover the Real West Virginia (DRWV) Foundation and the West Virginia Development Office -- to explore business opportunities between the Mountain State and Qatar. In addition to Ambassador H. E. Mohammed Jaham Al-Kuwari, Ambassador of the State of Qatar to the United States, Patrick N. Theros, former United States Ambassador to the State of Qatar and President of the US-Qatar Business Council, visited for the trade mission.
“Over the past several years, Reconnecting McDowell has played a critical role in improving opportunities for the next generation of McDowell County residents,” Senator Manchin said. “I am thrilled that Ambassador H. E. Mohammed Jaham Al-Kuwari understands the important work the organization is doing and that Embassy of the State of Qatar is committing a significant contribution to its efforts. This is such great news for the residents of McDowell County and for our entire state.

The West-Virginia-Qatar Trade Mission kicked off at a roundtable discussion at the BridgeValley Community and Technical College’s Advanced Technology Center in South Charleston with West Virginia state and local officials and business leaders. Following the discussion, the group attended a luncheon at the Governor’s Mansion with Governor Earl Ray Tomblin and toured several Charleston facilities.
