Manchin and Capito Announce More Than $1.5 Million for TRIO Program Projects at Five West Virginia Higher Education Institutions

TRIO Grants Awarded to West Virginia University, Marshall University, West Virginia State University, Bluefield State College and West Virginia University Institute of Technology

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senators Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) and Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) today announced funding totaling more than $1.5 million from the U.S. Department of Education’s TRIO Student Support Services Program. The funds will be awarded to West Virginia University, Marshall University, West Virginia State University, Bluefield State College and West Virginia University Institute of Technology to provide academic support and counseling to low-income, first-generation or disabled college students.

“When we invest in guidance and counseling programs at our colleges and universities, we help lead our students to promising and successful careers and secure our state and nation’s economic future,” Senator Manchin said. “The TRIO Student Support Services Program will help our students at West Virginia University, Marshall University, West Virginia State University, Bluefield State College and West Virginia University Institute of Technology gain the experience and skills needed to be competitive in the workforce and will help grow and keep jobs in West Virginia.”

“By providing tutoring, helping with course selection and motivating students to graduate, the TRIO Student Support Services Program helps low-income students, students with disabilities and first-generation college students succeed. I have long been a supporter of this program, and I applaud the Department of Education for awarding these crucial funds to five of West Virginia’s higher learning institutions,” said Senator Capito.

•        $284,754 – Marshall University

•        $284,754 – West Virginia State University

•        $356,760 – Bluefield State College

•        $343,138 – West Virginia University Institute of Technology
