Manchin and Capito Announce More than $800,000 for Aviation Safety in West Virginia

Washington, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senators Joe Manchin (D-WV) and Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV) announced that five airports in Logan, Grant, Mercer, Randolph and Mason counties will receive $864,949 in funding from the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

“As a pilot myself, I understand firsthand the importance of investing in our airport infrastructure and benefit it brings to our state and the communities these airports serve,” Senator Manchin said. “This funding will allow these airports to upgrade and rehabilitate their infrastructure to help prevent accidents, injuries and also lay the foundation for economic growth across West Virginia.”

“These airports are very important to the communities they serve and to the state’s economy, so it is critical that they continue to operate safely and reliably. I made sure funding for rural airports was prioritized during the appropriations process, and I am glad this funding will benefit several counties across West Virginia,” said Senator Capito

Individual awards are listed below:

$138,634 – Logan County Airport – This project will fund a new Runway 6/24 vertical/visual guidance system to make the airport more accessible by improving approaches to the runway ends. This project will also fund rehabilitation of 7,900 square yards of the existing apron to maintain structural integrity of the pavement and will fund the design phase to rehabilitate the apron.

 $220,000 – Grant County Airport – This project will fund seal coating and remarking to rehabilitate approximately 5,000 feet of Runway 13/1 needed to maintain the structural integrity of the pavement.

$156,755 – Mercer County Airport – This project will fund crack sealing and seal coating to rehabilitate approximately 4,500 feet of the existing Taxiways A, B, C and D needed to maintain structural integrity of the pavement.

 $144,000 – Elkins-Randolph County-Jennings Randolph Field Airport – This project will fund an environmental assessment to evaluate any potential environmental impacts related to removing obstructions that penetrate the Runway 5/23 approach surfaces.

 $205,560 – Mason County Airport – This project will fund rehabilitation of 4,000 feet of Runway 7/25 to maintain the structural integrity of the pavement and to minimize foreign object debris. This project will include crack sealing, seal coating, and markings.
