Manchin Announces $656k For West Virginia University, Marshall University Research Projects
Washington, DC – Today, U.S. Senator Joe Manchin (I-WV), member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, announced $656,814 from the National Science Foundation (NSF) for two West Virginia research initiatives. The funding will support a ten-week science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) research program for students at Marshall University and research into the obstacles that socioeconomically disadvantaged graduate students face at West Virginia University (WVU).
“The National Science Foundation has been a terrific partner to the Mountain State for years and these awards are proof of that,” said Senator Manchin. “These investments will support a ten-week program for STEM students at Marshall University and in-depth research into the challenges that socioeconomically disadvantaged graduate students endure in order to help increase college completion. As a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, I will continue advocating for resources that bolster academic research and support our universities across West Virginia.”
Individual awards listed below:
- $352,310 – Marshall University: (REU) Site: Safety Analysis and Design Nexus: Bridging Theory and Practice
- This funding will support a ten-week interactive research program aims to engage STEM students with a variety of career workshops and hands-on learning opportunities.
- $304,504 – West Virginia University: (NSF) Division of Social and Economic Sciences (SBE/SES)
- This funding will support research in assessing the obstacles faced by socioeconomically disadvantaged graduate students and the effect that these disadvantages have on student retention.
