Manchin Applauds Senate Passage of Transportation and Highway Funding Bill

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) today issued the following statement after the Senate passed the Highway and Transportation Funding Act. If enacted, the legislation will provide $8.1 billion through December 20, 2014 to continue federally funded infrastructure, transit and highway projects vital to our nation’s economic growth.

“Thankfully Congress could come together and recognize the necessity of funding our infrastructure, transportation and highway programs. I can only hope that Congress will be able to pass a long-term extension of this vital funding in the future. In West Virginia alone, there are currently more than 200 federally funded highway projects, and I am pleased that our construction contractors will not have to make the impossible decision of either reducing their workforce or stopping construction altogether. With more than 38,000 miles of public roads within West Virginia’s borders to oversee and maintain, investing in our infrastructure is one of the best ways to create jobs and boost economic development and prosperity, while also improving the conditions in our local communities.”
