Manchin, Capito Announce $1 Million For West Virginia Tobacco Control Program

Charleston, WV – U.S. Senators Joe Manchin (D-WV) and Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV), members of the Senate Appropriations Committee, today announced $1,024,172 from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) for the West Virginia tobacco control program.

“West Virginia has one of the highest rates of lung cancer per capita in the nation. This tobacco control program will help increase awareness about the effects of tobacco and the need for regular lung cancer screenings for high risk West Virginians. As a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, I will continue to advocate for funding that benefits the health of all West Virginians,” Senator Manchin said.

“This funding will allow us to address the high prevalence of tobacco use in our state and takes steps to make all West Virginians healthier. It will allow us to promote quitting for all smokers and provide resources to help with this, as well as taking much-needed steps to prevent our youth from ever starting. As a nation, we have seen success in reducing tobacco use and I look forward to seeing similar results in West Virginia,” said Senator Capito.
