Manchin, Capito Announce $500K To Support West Virginia Youth Experiencing Homelessness
Washington, DC – U.S. Senators Joe Manchin (D-WV) and Shelley Moore
Capito (R-WV), members of the Senate Appropriations Committee, today announced
$500,000 from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Family and
Youth Services Bureau for two West Virginia organizations to support West
Virginia youth currently experiencing homelessness. The funding will support
two Transitional
Living Programs, which work to help youth who are experiencing homelessness
transition to self-sufficient living. The programs provide money management, life
skills and job attainment trainings as well as educational opportunities,
counseling and other resources.
“More than 10,000 children in West Virginia and 1.4 million children
across the country are currently experiencing homelessness. Unfortunately, many
of these young West Virginians cannot return home or have no home to return to.
The Transitional Living Programs support West Virginia youth making the
difficult transition to living on their own by providing educational
opportunities, counseling and trainings on life skills, money management and
getting a job. Addressing youth homelessness continues to be one of my top priorities,
and I will continue to fight for funding to end youth homelessness in West
Virginia,” said Senator Manchin.
“West Virginians are known for coming
together in times of need, and we are proud of this reputation,” Senator
Capito said. “Regardless of circumstance, our young West Virginians deserve
stability and the opportunity to succeed, and HHS’ Transitional Living Program
will help provide that needed support. I am proud to announce this funding,
which will help individuals get back on solid footing and put them on a path to
long-term recovery by providing housing opportunities and supportive services.”
Individual awards listed below:
- $250,000 – The Children’s Home Society of West Virginia
- $250,000 – Youth Services System
