Manchin, Capito Announce More Than $100K To Support West Virginians Experiencing Homelessness

Washington, DC – U.S. Senators Joe Manchin (D-WV) and Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV), members of the Senate Appropriations Committee, today announced $101,160 from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to three West Virginia housing organizations to provide quality housing for all West Virginians. This funding will be used for counseling services, promoting financial literacy and other programs to address homelessness in West Virginia, especially children and youth homelessness. The funding is in addition to resources announced in September of 2021 to prevent youth homelessness in West Virginia.

“Ensuring every West Virginian has a roof over their head and a warm place to sleep at night continues to be one of my top priorities. More than 9,500 West Virginia children and more than a million children across the country are currently experiencing homelessness, and the COVID-19 pandemic has only made this devastating issue worse. I am thrilled HUD is investing in West Virginia organizations to help West Virginians currently experiencing homelessness and to support children and youth experiencing homelessness. I will continue fighting every day to ensure safe, affordable housing for every West Virginian across the Mountain State,” said Senator Manchin.

“Having a place to call home is about more than just safety, it’s about dignity,” Senator Capito said. “The grants announced today are such welcome news because it means our communities in Wheeling and Bridgeport, as well as those in Mingo County, will receive critical resources to ensure more West Virginians have access to safe and stable living conditions.
