Manchin, Capito Announce Nearly $700 Million for WV Flood Relief

Washington, D.C. –U.S. Senators Joe Manchin (D-WV) and Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV) announced $690.2 million in funding from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for supplemental storm projects.

“Many parts of our state were devastated by floods that took place months ago, and we’re still recovering from those damages,” Senator Manchin said. “West Virginians have always been resilient in a crisis, and these latest disasters proved to be no different. This funding from the Army Corps will help sustain that resiliency as we continue to make critical repairs to our roads, bridges and highways so our communities can continue to rebuild and revitalize. As a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, I will continue to fight for additional resources that support efforts and projects that ignite economic growth in West Virginia.”

“The Bipartisan Budget Act passed by Congress in February included significant funding for flood management and repair projects that will help keep West Virginians safe and protect our communities from future natural disasters,” Senator Capito said. “As a leader on the Appropriations Committee, I am proud to have helped secure resources like these that will enable the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to prevent future flooding and give our communities the support they need. I am thrilled to see this funding come to southern West Virginia to address several long-term needs and complete a number of critical projects like Bluestone Dam. I have supported funding every year I have been in the Senate for its construction, and being able to fully fund its completion is a major achievement for our state.”

Individual awards are listed below:

  • $574 million – Bluestone Dam

  • $96.2 million – Lower Mud River

  • $20 million – Flood proofing measures in McDowell County
