Manchin Comments on President's Speech on America's Energy Future

Washington, D.C. — U.S. Senator Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) today issued the following statement today after President Obama made remarks on achieving “A Secure Energy Future.”

“While the President made timely remarks today about the critical need for this nation to achieve energy security, they did not go far enough to address the brutal truth that this nation will never become energy secure or independent unless we utilize all of our resources, including coal, natural gas, wind, solar, hydro and biofuels,” Senator Manchin said.

“With the price of gas rising daily and unrest rampant in the Middle East, our nation needs to come together and craft a balanced energy policy that will create jobs and help this country declare energy independence – not an energy policy that is crafted by  bureaucrats, overregulated by the EPA, and ignores critical domestic resources by choosing winners and losers.

“To become energy independent, we simply do not have the luxury in the United States of ruling out any one resource, particularly coal - which provides nearly half our nation’s power. The bottom line is this: we need a commonsense, balanced, environmentally responsible energy policy that will help us achieve energy independence within a generation and that goal can only be achieved if we harness all of our natural resources -- coal, natural gas, wind, hydro, solar, biofuels and all the others.”
