Manchin Introduces Resolution To Support Removing Pier Off Gaza Strip
Washington, DC – Yesterday, U.S. Senator Joe Manchin (I-WV), member of the Senate Armed Services Committee (SASC), introduced a resolution to express the Sense of the Senate that President Biden should terminate all operations of the Joint Logistics Over-the-Shore pier on the coast of the Gaza Strip without unnecessarily invoking the War Powers Resolution. The Biden Administration announced earlier today they are in the process of removing the pier.
“Efforts to direct this pier’s removal by banning the participation of our servicemembers in its operation and invoking the War Powers Resolution to do so is not only unnecessary, it also sets a dangerous precedent that Congress will leverage the War Powers Resolution at will – even when it is entirely unnecessary. Using the War Powers Resolution to drive home this policy change is akin to using a sledgehammer when a chisel will do and it would impede the President’s authority to respond to natural disasters and armed conflict in the future. That’s why I introduced a Sense of the Senate resolution to express our support for removing the expensive piece of equipment that is putting our servicemembers in harm’s way without establishing a dangerous precedent in executive authority,” said Senator Manchin.
The full text of the resolution is available here.
