Washington, D.C. — U.S. Senator Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) released the following statement in advance of the second anniversary of Senator Robert C. Byrd’s death.

“Today, we remember our dear friend and a great statesman for all his contributions to our beautiful state and great nation. An unwavering defender of the Constitution and a determined fighter for West Virginia, Senator Robert C. Byrd remains on West Virginians’ minds, while his legacy of public service will forever live in our hearts.

“For me it is his wisdom, compassion, strength and independence that I reflect upon as a member of the United States Senate. His legacy continues to guide me on issues such as the war in Afghanistan and the need to rebuild America, as well as his concern for protecting our Constitutional system of checks and balances.

“Senator Byrd's many accomplishments have inspired us all to give something back to our community, state and nation. I encourage all West Virginians to honor his legacy by lending a helping hand to our fellow West Virginians.”
