Manchin , Rockefeller & Rahall Announce Funds for Cancer Research at Marshall University

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senator Jay Rockefeller, Chairman of the Finance Subcommittee on Health Care, Senator Joe Manchin, and Congressman Nick Rahall today announced $426,000 in federal funds for Marshall University from the National Cancer Institute’s Academic Research Enhancement Awards.

“Marshall University is conducting important cancer research that holds incredible promise and this funding will help make sure that research goes on uninterrupted,” Rockefeller said.  “Being awarded this competitive grant is a testament to the dedication and hard work of Marshall’s faculty and students.  I’m so proud that this very important research is taking place in West Virginia.”

“Investing in research opportunities in our state is just one way we can move West Virginia forward,” Senator Manchin said. “High-quality education and research is such an important way to ensure that West Virginia attracts the best and the brightest. An investment like this one speaks to the excellence of Marshall University and our great state.”

“Marshall’s roots as a teaching academy continue to strengthen its blossoming research achievements.  These funds help capture the budding interest of undergrads, and growing their interest in the sciences remains a national priority,” Rahall said. “I commend not only Dr. Dasgupta’s vision in engaging young students, but her innovative research in attacking one of the most aggressive forms of lung cancer.  Marshall’s research engine continues to help drive our regional economy and job growth.”

Marshall University’s Capsaicin and Small Cell Lung Cancer Therapy project is the recipient of the National Cancer Insitute’s Academic Research Enhancement Award (AREA).  AREA grants support small research projects in the biomedical and behavioral sciences conducted by students and faculty to strengthen the research environment of the institution and expose students to research.
