Manchin, Rockefeller, Rahall Announce FEMA Funding Awarded for Logan County Firefighters

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senators Joe Manchin and Jay Rockefeller (all D-W.Va.), along with U.S. Rep. Nick Rahall, Thursday announced the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has awarded funding to the Cora Volunteer Fire Department for operations and firefighter safety.

“Volunteer firefighters like Cora’s deserve our best efforts in providing them with the resources they need to save lives and protect our communities,” said Rahall, top Democrat on the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee which holds jurisdiction over FEMA. “I will continue to do all that I can to strengthen our State’s emergency response network.”

"Firefighters of the Cora Volunteer Fire Department provide their community with an incredible public safety service and peace of mind," said Rockefeller. "They put their lives on the line every day to safeguard Cora's families, businesses and homes from fires and other dangers. This infusion of funds will allow them to update vital safety equipment and protection they need when they're on the front lines."

"The hardworking and dedicated firefighters in our communities are often first on the scene in an emergency, making sure that the people of West Virginia are safe and well cared for each and every day," Manchin said. "These grants will provide our first responders - who sacrifice so much - with the necessary equipment and training to quickly respond to West Virginians in times of need."

Cora Volunteer Fire Department (VFD) will receive a $128,203 Assistance to Firefighter Grant (AFG) to purchase a new air compressor and cascade system to replace outdated, non-compliant equipment currently in use by department personnel.  The 32-member all-volunteer Cora VFD just marked its 40th anniversary. The department serves the 25-square mile service district of Holden, Whitman, Cora and Shamrock.  The department also provides mobile air services to Mingo County fire departments and Mingo and Logan Counties Sheriffs’ Departments.

 “I am almost speechless from gratitude,” said Cora Fire Chief George Hill.  “We greatly appreciate this funding, which will help us get new equipment to replace our old system which has outlived its life of duty.”

The AFG program awards grants directly to local fire departments and Emergency Medical Service organizations to enhance their ability to protect the health and safety of the public, as well as that of first-responder personnel.
