Manchin Statement on Celebrating Father's Day

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) today released the following statement about the celebration of Father’s Day.

“Today, I celebrate with all West Virginians the fathers and father-figures who have supported and loved us throughout our lives. The impact fathers and grandfathers have in the lives of the people who love them is why we dedicate this day to them. West Virginia was one of the first places to devote a day to fathers over 100 years ago. In July 1908, a Sunday sermon was dedicated to 362 men, most of whom had children, who died in a tragic coal mining explosions the previous December. Ever since that first event, West Virginians have continued the tradition of thanking fathers.

“This day is special because we take the opportunity to give a fraction of what our fathers gave to us, back to them. Being a father and a grandfather has been one of the great joys of my life and I am grateful every day. I encourage you to spend time with your families and take a moment to thank our fathers for their strength, guidance and love that has helped us through the years.”
