Manchin Statement on Celebrating Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Joe Manchin today released the following statement on celebrating Martin Luther King Jr. Day. On Monday at 8 a.m., Senator Manchin will deliver remarks at the MLK Unity Breakfast at Capital High School in Charleston.

“Today we celebrate one of the most influential and inspirational figures in our nation’s history – Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. In his short life, Dr. King made a powerful impact on our nation as a courageous leader who brought hope to humanity by peacefully fighting racial injustice and helping millions of Americans overcome discrimination and segregation. His revolutionary movement was about more than civil rights – it was about instilling in our society the values of unity, love and forgiveness and inspiring a community to improve and make a difference for others. His spirit lives on in the millions he inspired to make this country a better, stronger and more peaceful nation. As we commemorate his life, work and legacy on this day, I encourage all West Virginians to take a moment and remember the difference that we are each capable of making. Let us reflect on the opportunities we have to make a difference, and let us take action by helping a neighbor, dedicating an hour to community service or contributing in some way to your local community.”
