Manchin Statement on Century Aluminum Retiree Settlement
Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) issued the following statement regarding today’s announcement that the retirees of Ravenswood Century Aluminum plant will receive $23 million over 10 years for healthcare benefits.
“In 2009, the plant closed and in 2010, all the employees were told all of their health care benefits, that had been promised to them and negotiated in good faith, were gone by the stroke of a pen. These are some of the hardest-working people. They don’t ask for a whole lot, just the ability to take care of themselves and their families. That is why I am so glad that Century Aluminum and U.S. District Judge John Copenhaver have finally brought this chapter of uncertainty to an end and will honor the healthcare benefits that these retired steelworkers have earned and deserve. Karen Gorrell led these efforts from day one on behalf of these retirees. I am also so proud of the United Steelworkers union for fighting for the benefits that they have earned through a lifetime of hard work and for never giving up the fight. I join all of the retirees in celebration and great relief, as they and their families can rest easy now that their healthcare benefits have been secured.”
