Manchin to Address WVU ROTC Cadets at Scholarship Luncheon

Manchin will recognize students’ achievements, highlight importance of “I Hire Veterans” initiative

Also Wednesday, Manchin will speak at Dynamic Networking for Small Business Conference about increasing opportunities for small businesses, creating jobs

Washington, D.C. — On the third day of his “Fighting for Every Job” tour, U.S. Senator Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) will address West Virginia University’s ROTC cadets at the annual Army and Air Force Scholarship luncheon and promote his “I Hire Veterans” project. In his address to the cadets, Manchin will talk about his efforts to help match employers with the highly-skilled men and women of our armed forces who have left the armed services.

“The men and women of our armed forces are some of the most highly trained and disciplined individuals around, not to mention the fact that they've developed tremendous leadership skills. They are truly battle-tested, and that is why every employer in the state of West Virginia and around the country would be lucky to have a veteran on their staff,” Senator Manchin said. “We started the 'I Hire Veterans' initiative because unemployment is the greatest challenge facing our servicemembers when they get home, and that is absolutely unacceptable. The ‘I Hire Veterans’ initiative is about making a public and personal commitment to hiring veterans – and the young men and women in our ROTC programs should know this country will be there for them when they finish their service.”

The ROTC luncheon is one of four public events Senator Manchin will hold in North-Central West Virginia tomorrow. He will also deliver remarks to Leadership Marion members, participate in Marion County Chamber of Commerce’s “Coffee with Congress” event, and speak at the Dynamic Networking for Small Businesses event.

During his two-week “Fighting for Every Job” tour, Senator Manchin is traveling all over West Virginia to highlight the connection between jobs and energy independence, his agenda to help small businesses succeed, how to revitalize American manufacturing, the importance of training our workforce through higher education, and his growing effort to hire unemployed veterans.
