Manchin Urges Senate Leadership to Fund Opioids Recovery Efforts and Rural Broadband Infrastructure

Washington, D.C. – As Republican and Democratic Senate leadership continue to negotiate a funding package to keep the government open, U.S. Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) urged Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) to fund opioid treatment and recovery programs and efforts to deploy broadband infrastructure in rural West Virginia – two of his major priorities in the spending bill.

“West Virginia has been ravaged by the opioid epidemic and to address it head on we need to dedicate the funding necessary. The first responders, medical professionals and families in our communities know what it takes to end this epidemic and it’s Congress' job to fully support their efforts. For West Virginians to compete in a 21st century marketplace we need access to reliable internet in every corner of our state. It’s no longer acceptable for children in New York City to have different opportunities than children in Paden City, West Virginia. It’s long past time Congress starts prioritizing the needs of West Virginians and I encourage Senate leaders to do just that,” Senator Manchin said.
