Manchin, Van Hollen Introduce Bipartisan Legislation To Boost Resources For Chesapeake Bay Conservation

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senators Joe Manchin (D-WV) and Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) introduced legislation to provide more resources to Chesapeake Bay conservation efforts. The Chesapeake Watershed Investments for Landscape Defense (Chesapeake WILD) Act will create a new grant program within the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to support habitat restoration in the Bay region. It is modeled after the Delaware River Basin Conservation Act, which is funded at $5 million annually, and would provide millions in new resources to the Chesapeake Bay.

In addition to Senators Manchin and Van Hollen, the legislation is sponsored by Senators Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV), Ben Cardin (D-MD), Tom Carper (D-DE), Tim Kaine (D-VA), Mark Warner (D-VA), Chris Coons (D-DE), Bob Casey (D-PA), and Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY).

“I am proud to cosponsor the Chesapeake WILD Act to create a grant program that will enhance the fish and wildlife species through habitat restoration in the Chesapeake Bay region, an incredible wildlife area that includes multiple counties in West Virginia. I look forward to working with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle as we work to establish this grant system within the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to improve habitats in our state and across the Chesapeake Bay region,” said Senator Manchin.

“Protecting the Bay wildlife is crucial to Maryland’s environment and economy. The Chesapeake WILD Act will provide more resources for our local partners to undertake critical conservation efforts and will create new a link between our partners on the ground and the Fish and Wildlife Service. I’m proud to introduce this bipartisan bill, and I look forward to working together to secure its passage and provide the Bay with this boost in support,” said Senator Van Hollen.
