Transportation Worker 3 Building & Trades – Greenbrier County

Nature of Work

The Transportation Worker 3 Building and Trade will report to the District Maintenance Office. Under limited supervision, performs journey level skilled work in building, repairing, and maintaining all Division of Highways structures. Performs HVAC, carpentry, electrical, plumbing, concrete forming and finishing, and other maintenance work. The selected applicant will serve as a working shop leader and will act as a mentor training lower level building and trade employees. Will be responsible for installing, maintaining, and making repairs to building equipment such as replacing motors, belts, seals, bearings, and blades. Preference may be given to candidates with knowledge of maintenance  and repair methods practiced in the building construction and maintenance trades. May be exposed to hazardous working conditions and inclement weather. Performs other related duties as required. 

• Preference will be given to applicants with a certification in HVAC, electric, plumbing, or journeyman mason or carpentry.  


The selected applicant will be placed in a U.S. Department of Labor apprenticeship program. Progression through the apprenticeship program is dependent upon hours completed, proficiency in work, training completed, as well as maintaining and/or obtaining a Commercial Drivers License (CDL).  
• A valid class A or B Commercial Driver’s License may be required for the functional areas of Auto Body Repair, Bridge Maintenance, Building & Trade, Mechanic, and Traffic Control, at the discretion of the appointing authority. 


Pay Grade: 12H
Base Hourly Rate: $19.1295

Typical Duties and Responsibilities

Transportation Worker 3 – Building & Trade
• Installs, maintains, and repairs equipment.
• Tightens fan belts and changes oil filters on heating and cooling equipment.
• Performs routine repairs to equipment such as replacing motors, belts, seals, bearings, and blades.
• Replaces or installs plumbing and sprinkler systems.
• Leads or trains lower level building and trade workers.
• Travel may be required; therefore, a valid driver’s license is required.
• A valid class A or B Commercial Driver’s License may be required for the functional areas of Building & Trade, at the discretion of the appointing authority. 

Required Skills and Knowledge

• Knowledge of safety practices used in structural steel construction
• Knowledge of the procedures, techniques and equipment used in the assigned areas
• Knowledge of the occupational hazards and applicable safety standards and procedures of the assigned area
• Knowledge of basic blueprint reading
• Knowledge of general construction and maintenance practices
• Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the maintenance, repair and overhaul of gasoline and diesel-powered engines and their components
• Knowledge of the operation of motor driven equipment
• Ability to diagnose mechanical problems and determine appropriate procedures for repairs
• Ability to safely operate basic hand and power tools
• Ability to read operation manuals, blueprints, and specifications in the assigned areas
• Ability to operate motorized equipment in the assigned areas
• Ability to perform skilled trades work in bridge construction and maintenance
• Ability to operate and maintain highway equipment and attachments
• Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
• Ability to maintain accurate records of daily maintenance activities and of gauges and meters used in heating ventilation and cooling systems
• Ability to climb high steel structures
• Ability to train and work cooperatively with other skilled and semi-skilled workers

Required Education and Experience

 REQUIRED TRAINING/EDUCATION 
• No formal education required.

  REQUIRED EXPERIENCE 
• Building & Trade: Four (4) years of full-time or equivalent part-time paid experience in construction,
maintenance, plumbing, electrical, or HVAC work.
• Substitutions: Successful completion of an approved vocational school program may be substituted for two (2) year of the required experience in the specified functional area.
