Transportation Worker 3 Mechanic – Cabell County
Nature of Work
The Transportation Worker 3 Mechanic will report to the District Equipment Shop. Under limited supervision, the incumbent performs full-performance level, skilled work in the repair and maintenance of all highway equipment. This person will often serve as a working shop leader. The selected applicant will be responsible for mentoring lower level employees and mechanics. As an advanced level mechanic, they will perform major overhaul of gasoline and diesel-powered equipment including repairs of hydraulic brake systems and troubleshooting electrical system. Skill is needed for the fabrication of engines and machinery parts from blueprints and drawings. With appropriate certification and licenses, is responsible for driving equipment after repairs to test operation. Maintains records of work orders, inventory, and repairs completed. May be exposed to hazardous working conditions and inclement weather. Performs other related duties as required.
• A valid class A or class B Commercial Driver's License may be required for the functional areas of Auto Body Repair, Bridge Maintenance, Building & Trade, Mechanic, and Traffic Control, at the discretion of the appointing authority.
Pay Grade: 12H
Base Hourly Rate: $19.1295

Typical Duties and Responsibilities
Transportation Worker 3 – Mechanic
• Fabricates engine and machinery parts from blueprints and drawings
• Performs major overhaul of gasoline and diesel-powered automotive and highway equipment
• Performs a full range of maintenance, repair, and overhaul on diesel powered engines and components exclusive to diesel equipment
• Performs repairs to a variety of hydraulic systems
• Performs preventative maintenance inspections on heavy equipment
• With appropriate welding certification, repairs highway maintenance vehicles and equipment using welding equipment
• Maintains records of work orders, parts inventory and repair
* Travel may be required; therefore, a valid driver’s license is required.
*A valid class A or B Commercial Driver’s License may be required for the functional areas of Mechanic, at the discretion of the appointing authority.

• Knowledge of the occupational hazards and applicable safety standards and procedures of the assigned area
• Knowledge of basic blueprint reading
• Knowledge of general construction and maintenance practices
• Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the maintenance, repair and overhaul of gasoline and diesel-powered engines and their components
• Knowledge of the operation of motor driven equipment
• Ability to diagnose mechanical problems and determine appropriate procedures for repairs
• Ability to safely operate basic hand and power tools
• Ability to read operation manuals, blueprints, and specifications in the assigned areas
• Ability to operate motorized equipment in the assigned areas
• Ability to perform skilled trades work in bridge construction and maintenance
• Ability to operate and maintain highway equipment and attachments
• Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
• Ability to maintain accurate records of daily maintenance activities and of gauges and meters used in heating ventilation and cooling systems
• Ability to climb high steel structures
• Ability to train and work cooperatively with other skilled and semi-skilled workers

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE
