Manchin and Capito Announce $525,000 for Critical Construction at Mercer County Airport
Washington D.C. – Today, U.S. Senators Joe Manchin (D-WV) and Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV) announced $525,000 in federal funding for a construction project at Mercer County Airport in Bluefield. The funding will be used for a necessary taxiway that will enhance the safety of airfield operations and ensure that the airport meets specific design standards.
“As a pilot myself and as Co-Chairman of the General Aviation Caucus in the Senate, I understand the importance of investing in our airport infrastructure,” Senator Manchin said. “Having an upgraded taxiway at the Mercer County Airport is critical to the safety of our pilots, passengers and all those in the community who benefit from the services provided by the airport. This project will help prevent avoidable accidents and injuries while also laying the foundation for economic growth in the region.”
“Addressing our country's crumbling infrastructure is an area that can bridge the partisan divide and further economic growth,” said Senator Capito. “West Virginians rely on our airports and other transportation systems to access hard to reach areas in the state and to transport necessary goods and services. The new taxiway at Mercer County Airport that will be funded by this grant will enhance safety for West Virginians and visitors traveling to and from the Mountain State.”
The funding was awarded by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
