Manchin, Bipartisan Colleagues Introduce The Protecting American Agriculture From Foreign Adversaries Act
Washington, DC – Today, U.S. Senator Joe Manchin (I-WV) joined a bipartisan group of colleagues to introduce the Protecting American Agriculture from Foreign Adversaries Act of 2024. This commonsense legislation permanently adds the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture to the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS), providing an additional layer of scrutiny to over foreign acquisitions of U.S. farmland and agricultural industries. The bill would ensure that any agricultural purchases made by foreign adversaries, such as China, North Korea, Russia, and Iran, are flagged and reviewed.
“The Protecting American Agriculture from Foreign Adversaries Act of 2024 is an essential tool for safeguarding our nation’s agricultural resources from foreign threats,” said Senator Manchin. “In recent years, we’ve witnessed a troubling surge in foreign ownership of American farmland, posing serious risks to both our national security and food security. This commonsense bill gives the Secretary of Agriculture a permanent review role on CFIUS to prevent adversaries who don’t share our values from gaining control over American agricultural assets, which will protect our farms in West Virginia and across the country.”
Senator Manchin was joined by Senators Mike Braun (R-IN), Tommy Tuberville (R-AL), Tom Cotton (R-AR), Jon Tester (D-MT), Roger Marshall (R-KS), John Fetterman (D-PA), Chuck Grassley (R-IA), Marsha Blackburn (R-TN), Pete Ricketts (R-NE), John Barrasso (R-WY), Katie Britt (R-AL), and Deb Fischer (R-NE). Representative Dan Newhouse (R-WA) introduced companion legislation in the House.
