Manchin Kicks Off ‘Our Values, Our Priorities’ Week with Celebration of the National Guard

Manchin underscores the Guard’s contributions to helping put nation’s fiscal house in order

During the weeklong tour, Manchin will highlight the values and priorities that make West Virginia strong, focusing on local businesses, economic growth, retraining for good jobs and creating jobs

Washington, D.C. — U.S. Senator Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) today celebrated the elevation of the National Guard to a position on the Joint Chiefs of Staff with an event at the Center for National Response training area. It was the first event of his weeklong statewide tour focused on “Our Values, Our Priorities,” which will include events recognizing West Virginia’s strong businesses, creating jobs, retraining the unemployed for good-paying jobs, educating our children, strengthening our aging network and keeping our promises to seniors.

Senator Manchin, a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, strongly advocated for the well-deserved honor and responsibility for the Guard.

I am so proud that I can tell our nation's military leaders that I come from West Virginia, because it is well-known that our Guard is the best in the country,Senator Manchin said. The courage, hard work and patriotism of the West Virginia National Guard – and our Guard members all across this nation – earned them a spot in the highest ranks of our military. I truly believe that the Guard will play a critical role in helping this country get our financial house in order because our Guard members do the same work that we currently overpay contractors to perform. It's just common sense that we should turn to the Guard as we look to live within our means.

Today’s event at the Center for National Response training was planned to highlight Homeland Defense capabilities and training programs of the West Virginia National guard. The training that takes place at the tunnel prepares military personnel and first responders to respond to – and potentially prevent – attacks on America.
