Manchin Named Chairman of Armed Services Subcommittee
Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) announced today that he will chair the Senate Armed Services Committee Subcommittee on Airland in the 113th Congress. He will also continue to serve on the Armed Services Subcommittee on Emerging Threats and Capabilities and the Subcommittee on Readiness and Management Support.
The Subcommittee on Airland, which was previously chaired by Senator Joe Lieberman, oversees the air and ground equipment of all four military service branches, including the National Guard and Reserves.
"I have always said that West Virginia is one of the most patriotic states in the country,” Senator Manchin said, “In our state we have two Army and Air National Guard and Reserves bases, the Naval Radio Astronomy Observatory, the Allegheny Ballistics Laboratory, a Navy-owned research facility and numerous armories and other facilities working on national security. It is so important that we make sure our armed services in West Virginia and across the nation have the funding, equipment and training they need.
“I am so pleased that Senator Levin has offered me this position and I am eager to tackle the tough issues facing our nation's military. I will remain committed to making sure we are doing all that we can to bring our servicemen and women, who make enormous sacrifices to defend our country, home safely.”
