Manchin Statement on Buffalo Creek Disaster
Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Joe Manchin today made the following statement on the 40th anniversary of the Buffalo Creek disaster.
“Gayle and I join fellow West Virginians as we observe the 40th anniversary of the Buffalo Creek disaster,” Senator Manchin said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the many families forever changed 40 years ago by one of our nation’s most deadly floods. This disaster caused tragic deaths, leveled landscapes and left thousands homeless; however, in a time of great despair, something much deeper was exposed and that was the resilience, the compassion and the unique spirit of West Virginians. Today and every day we, as West Virginians, should remember those lost and affected by the tragedy at Buffalo Creek and also work to ensure this never happens again.”
