Manchin Supports Overturning Harmful Methane Regulations

Washington, DC – Today, U.S. Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) released the following statement on his support for the Congressional Review Act (CRA) to overturn the Trump Administration’s Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Methane Rescission Rule that amended previous standards and reversed methane emissions regulations. The Senate approved the Congressional Review Act 52-42.

“Today the Senate corrected an unnecessary decision made by the Trump Administration that ignored the innovation efforts to detect and repair methane leaks and progress already made to reduce emissions. The Senate voted 52-42 to overturn the rule, showing bipartisan support for the original regulations that support investments by oil and gas companies in technologies to address avoidable methane emissions that are both wasteful and incredibly harmful to the environment. This Congressional Review Act is a step in the right direction and I will continue working with the EPA to invest in reducing emissions through technology and innovation.”

On August 13, 2020, Senator Manchin condemned the rollback existing regulations covering new source methane emissions.
