Manchin Comments on Alpha Natural Resources' Merger with Massey Energy

Washington, D.C.—U.S. Senator Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) today released the following statement regarding news that Alpha Natural Resources Inc. will acquire Massey Energy Co.

“Alpha Natural Resources is an American company with a long and storied history in our region, and I am proud that they will supply West Virginia’s coal to the nation and the world,” Manchin said. “I am hopeful that Alpha will keep high-paying jobs for the hardworking West Virginians who work in the mines now as well as create opportunities for good jobs into the future. After last year’s tragedy at Upper Big Branch, we must continue to see a commitment from mining companies to the safety of their employees. West Virginia’s coal mining industry has a critical role to play in our country’s energy infrastructure, and this purchase will help ensure that our state is well-positioned to carry out this role well into the future.”
